Fast Food Solutions

I think one of the most frustrating things about eating healthy is the shortage of fast food options. I know... I know... healthy usually does not equal fast, but there are various levels of "healthy" and various speeds of "fast". Yes, some home-steamed greens would be better than a baked potato from Wendy's. But a baked potato from Wendy's is better than curly fries from Arby's! And it is something quick that you can get to satisfy hunger and give you a few nutrients. So... in that spirit, let's offer our favorite "faster" food options for the faster on the go.

Here's my first contribution:

Food: Broccoli and garlic sauce (brown rice optional).
Location: Just about any chinese carryout (I prefer the cheaper ones... the "upscale" chinese carryouts use a different garlic sauce... more bitter).
Cost: Varies usually less than $8... depending on the size and time of day.

Most of your average carryouts don't have brown rice. The chinese places that have brown rice usually have other menu options that are better choices than this (mock shrimp, chicken, and beef, etc). So this suggestion is for your average run of the mill carryout that you can find almost anywhere. This dish has saved me on many a day.

I like this post! I have no original ideas yet, but to piggyback off of the Chinese food thing, many carryouts offer a "Healthy" or "Diet" Section with steamed entrees instead of the the stir fry. You can also ask for the sauce on the side.

Ah, a subject near and dear to my heart. I usually don't plan well and end up realizing that I didn't eat once I'm nowhere near a kitchen.

Broccoli and garlic sauce is one of my favorites.

I've also learned to soup shop. Au Bon Pain has a large assortment of vegetarian soups. Corner Bakery has a really great Black Bean soup. Adega Wine Cellars in Downtown Silver Spring has the best Tomato Basil I've ever tasted (too bad I can't eat the bread during the fast).

There are many places with great salads like Cosi. I know salad isn't the most sexy fast food but between those and the soups, I've escaped many french fry encounters.

And don't forget Barely Bake! PG One knows all to well about this delicious dish!

Let's not give out the Barley Bake. Next thing you know everyone will be making it and trying to get me to eat it. No can do!
